Mapping Method

Sampling Geometry

Depth is measured at discrete points:

(lat, lng, depth)

These samples form a spatial distribution rather than a continuous surface.

Interpolation

A surface is generated using Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW).

Principles

  • closer points have greater influence
  • influence decreases with distance
  • multiple points contribute to each estimate

Resulting Surface

The output is:

  • a continuous raster representation
  • derived from discrete samples
  • dependent on sampling density

Resolution Factors

Map quality depends on:

  • survey spacing
  • path coverage
  • vehicle speed
  • filtering thresholds

Limitations

  • interpolation introduces assumptions
  • gaps in data affect accuracy
  • surface is a model, not direct measurement
