What

Hazel's own Foldkit app, drawn natively by Rune (a GPU UI framework in Rust). Same init, update, view and subscriptions as the web app; the web build is untouched. This is the start of a desktop app that does not need a webview.

Native (left) and Chromium (right) at 2bfe683, same fixture, after typing and sending a message:

Previous revision

How

Rune host (Rust, apps/native/host) Bun runtime (apps/native/src/entry.ts)
window, layout, text, GPU Foldkit runtime with a RenderTarget
draws the wire tree <── trees ─── view -> VNodes -> styles resolved -> wire tree
presses, edits, layout ─── events ──> events -> the VNodes' own handlers -> Messages
  • Foldkit gets a RenderTarget option (feat(foldkit): render to a RenderTarget instead of a DOM container Makisuo/foldkit#1), applied here as patches/foldkit@0.170.0.patch until a release ships it.
  • packages/foldkit-rune: the target. A selector parser and cascade (layers, specificity, :is/:where, child and descendant variants, group/peer/in/has, preflight and a small UA sheet) resolve Tailwind against styles.css, so the host only sees px and colours. New classes after boot compile off the input path. Trees carry a generation, so a press runs the handler of the tree it was made on. Unchanged subtrees go as content-hash references (a keystroke is about 2 KB).
  • apps/native: the Rust host (images, emoji, rounded clips, shadows and rings, sticky headers, auto margins, inline formatting), the Bun entry with DOM shims, and the composer: Hazel's ProseMirror editor runs on a headless DOM behind a native text field, edited by the smallest change so its blocks survive.
  • Data: HAZEL_DATA=offline (default) serves a fixture org over a local sync socket and answers HTTP calls from their RPC schemas, so sending goes through the real optimistic action and sync stream. HAZEL_DATA=live uses VITE_BACKEND_URL with HAZEL_SESSION_TOKEN, sent only to that origin.

Run it: cd apps/native && bun run host:build && bun run build && HAZEL_NATIVE_ENTRY=dist/entry.js host/target/release/hazel-native (see apps/native/README.md).

Conformance against Chromium

Two suites, so fidelity is measured rather than eyeballed:

  • Styles (packages/foldkit-rune/src/conformance.test.ts): 1,690 elements whose computed styles Chromium recorded (the app in light and dark, and a synthetic page of utilities), about 50 checks each. Everything matches except 4 allowlisted values the wire cannot express (w-1/2, left-1/2 centring, bottom-full).
  • Layout and pixels (bun run conformance in apps/native): renders the same scenarios natively and in Chromium, matches elements, compares rects and pixels; --check enforces thresholds.json.
Scenario Elements matched Positions within 4 pt Text within 4 pt Pixels matching
Boot, light / dark 99.3% 97.4% 100% 97.3% / 97.2%
Sent, light / dark 99.3% 97.6% 100% 97.6% / 97.4%

At the start of this round the same harness measured 97% matched, 21% of positions within 4 pt and 93.7% of pixels.

Benchmarks

bun apps/native/bench/run.ts --runs 5: same scenario and fixture both sides (boot into #general, type "Hello from Rune", press Enter), 1280x800 at 2x, median of 5 runs. Web is the production bundle in headless Chromium 156.

Metric Native (Rune + Bun) Web (Chromium)
Process start to first app frame 313 ms 256 ms (FCP, from navigation)
Process start to #general's messages in a frame 551 ms (frame built) 634 ms (357 ms from navigation)
Process start to settled (incl. editor) 1155 ms 651 ms
Key to frame, p50 / p95 7.2 / 12.2 ms (frame built) first rAF 16.0 / 28.8 ms; Event Timing: every key under 16 ms
Enter to sent message on screen 40.9 ms 27.1 ms
Frame CPU with a new tree, p50 / p95 0.5 / 1.9 ms n/a
Memory, all processes 502 MB (host 37, runtime 465) 1315 MB
JS heap used 127 MB 35 MB

Native shows messages sooner from a cold start and uses about 40% of the memory. Native times end when the frame is built on the CPU; it is then presented at the next vsync. Compared with the previous revision, key p95 (6.8 to 12.2 ms) and Enter (32.8 to 40.9 ms) are now timed honestly: a round trip ends at the tree that acknowledges the input, and Enter ends when the sent message is on screen, where before any tree counted. The heap is larger by the fuller resolver's caches. The editor is ready later on purpose (its headless DOM loads after boot).

Verification

  • 57 TypeScript tests across packages/foldkit-rune and apps/native (resolver, conformance replay, wire tree and generations, element bridge, fixture server, offline backend, shims, queued and minimal editor edits); 34 Rust host tests drive real wire JSON through layout and rendering. New tests were checked to fail without their fix.
  • Conformance --check passes in light and dark; the benchmark above.
  • bun run lint, oxfmt --check, typecheck of both packages and web-foldkit, cargo clippy --all-targets and cargo fmt --check clean, knip clean for these packages.
  • Env vars (HAZEL_DATA, HAZEL_SESSION_TOKEN, NATIVE_*) are local dev knobs with defaults; nothing reads them in the web app or in deploys.

Not yet native

  • Popovers, menus and pickers: Mounts other than the message list and the composer do not acquire.
  • Interaction styles (focus:, active:, disabled: colours), animations and transitions.
  • Grid is emulated with flex rows; Rune does not expose Taffy's grid templates yet.
  • Text inside SVG icons (the GIF icon), text-box trimming, vertical margin collapsing, fractions of the parent's width.
  • The Rust host is not built in CI.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a native app experience with light and dark themes, interactive controls, editable message fields, scrolling, and support for images and SVGs.
    • Added an offline mode that opens to a sample workspace and supports common messaging and presence actions.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed the Browse channels keyboard shortcut’s focus styling in forced-colors mode.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance for launching the native app and an overview of its rendering support and limitations.

makeApplication and makeElement accept a renderTarget instead of a container:
the runtime keeps update, Commands, Subscriptions, ManagedResources, Ports and
routing, and hands the target each committed Document. The patch is the built
runtime from Makisuo/foldkit#1 applied to foldkit 0.170.0; drop it once a
release ships the interface. The DOM path is unchanged.
A Foldkit RenderTarget that serializes each committed Document into a wire tree
for a native renderer:

- Tailwind classes resolve with Tailwind's own compiler against the app's
stylesheet (scanned up front like the build): custom property scoping,
data/aria variants, dark mode, :has, child and descendant rules, viewport
units. The host receives px and colours, never class names.
- Handler ids are stable per element path and unchanged subtrees are sent as
content-hash references, so a keystroke ships about 2 KB.
- Geometry-observing Mounts run against element proxies whose size, scroll,
ResizeObserver and MutationObserver come from host layout; Mounts that need
a real DOM get one from a factory.
- Host events become event-shaped objects passed to the VNodes' own handlers,
with a seq/ack so controlled inputs never drop keystrokes.
apps/native boots the web app's own init/update/view/subscriptions in Bun and
draws them with Rune (host/, Rust). The message list measures itself through
the element bridge; the composer runs Hazel's ProseMirror editor on a headless
DOM behind a native text field.

HAZEL_DATA=offline (default) serves a fixture org over a local sync socket and
answers the app's HTTP calls from their RPC schemas, so sending a message
round-trips through the real optimistic action and sync stream. HAZEL_DATA=live
uses VITE_BACKEND_URL with a session bearer.

bench/run.ts runs the same scenario natively (the host's --capture mode) and in
Chromium (bench/web) and reports medians.

Walkthrough

This change adds a native Rune rendering path for Hazel. It includes Foldkit render-target support, a TypeScript runtime and Rust host, offline fixture data, browser and editor shims, and tools that benchmark native and Chromium output and test style and visual conformance.

Changes: Native Rune renderer

Layer / File(s) Summary
Render target and Rune package
patches/foldkit@0.170.0.patch, packages/foldkit-rune/*
Foldkit applications and elements can use a renderTarget in place of a DOM container. The Rune package adds style and selector resolution, CSS color parsing, wire messages, JSON-lines transport, document serialization, and a host-backed element bridge.
Rust host rendering
apps/native/host/*
The Rust host receives runtime trees and renders layout, text, images, SVG, forms, and editable fields. It reports layout and scroll state, handles input events, and supports scripted offscreen captures.
Native runtime and offline data
apps/native/src/*, apps/native/bench/web/*
The native entry configures offline or live requests and connects the application to the Rune target. Offline fixtures supply snapshots, WebSocket sync, token responses, and RPC handling. Editor events can queue until the headless editor is ready.
Benchmark and conformance tools
apps/native/bench/*, packages/foldkit-rune/conformance/*
The benchmark tools capture native and Chromium runs and report timing, memory, layout, and pixel comparisons. Style conformance tests compare Rune-resolved styles with Chromium fixture values.
Project wiring and supporting changes
apps/native/package.json, apps/native/README.md, knip.json, package.json, vitest.config.ts, apps/web-foldkit/src/*
The changes add package scripts, test configuration, workspace entries, documentation, a public editor class constant, and a corrected Tailwind class. Gitignore rules exclude generated build and benchmark output.

- Clearing the native field leaves one empty paragraph: the editor schema
needs a block, as the app's own clear path keeps.
- A key the editor handles that changes the document (undo, a markdown
shortcut) re-commits so the native field takes the editor's text.
- contains() matches a path boundary: r/10 is not inside r/1.
- A different Mount in the same slot destroys the old one and inserts the new.
- getComputedStyle answers custom properties from the stylesheet for the
  current theme.
- The capture script's key step sends Backspace.

On the summary-only findings:

  • F17 (bench/run.ts not in knip's entry list): same as F16. Knip picks it up from the bench script, and listing it too is flagged as a redundant entry.
  • F18 (requestFrame detached from its RenderTarget): fixed in 44fc907 (patch) and Makisuo/foldkit@feat/render-target. The renderer now calls surface.target.requestFrame(frame), so a class-based target keeps this.

Handle clipboard process errors before reporting success.

If pbcopy is unavailable or cannot start, its unhandled error can terminate the Bun runtime and leave the native window unresponsive. Handle child-process and stdin errors, and resolve writeText only after a successful exit. Reject it on failure so callers can report the copy error.

Keep fixture writes in subsequent snapshots.

In offline mode, a sent message can disappear when its channel reconnects or reopens after release. write broadcasts the row but does not retain it, so the next snapshot omits it. Store fixture writes per source and include them in later snapshots with the current sequence.

Preserve editor structure when applying native edits.

When a user edits a quoted message, this replacement converts the quote to a plain paragraph, so submission loses the quote formatting. Native typing also bypasses handleTextInput, so triggers such as @ do not open autocomplete. Apply incremental edits through the editor’s input path while preserving existing nodes.

Unsubscribe fixture streams when they close.

Each closed stream leaves its callback registered with the offline server. Reopening a channel repeatedly retains callbacks and makes each later write schedule extra frames. Store the unsubscribe callback and invoke it when the stream or socket closes.

Review comments at @apps/native/bench/run.ts:
- Around line 111-123: Update the `run.ts` flow to validate cached web results
before starting native runs when `--skip-web` is set. If the cache is missing or
does not match the current run count and revision, fail early or produce a
native-only report; if reused, label the web results with their actual run count
and provenance. Preserve the existing behavior when web benchmarks run normally.
- Line 24: Validate the `--runs` value in the benchmark argument-parsing flow
before starting any build; reject missing, non-integer, and non-positive values
so the benchmark cannot proceed with an invalid run count.
- Around line 47-83: Update nativeRun’s sample-reading path to verify that both
required process RSS samples are present for each run before returning benchmark
data. If either sample is missing because ps failed or omitted a process, fail
the run or emit an explicit measurement warning, and do not silently report n/a
or calculate a median from fewer runs than stated.

Review comments at @apps/native/bench/web/run.ts:
- Around line 443-447: Update the browser-version probe to reuse the Chromium
browser instance used for the measured run, rather than calling chromium.launch
separately. Read its version and preserve the existing results-writing flow
without closing the measured browser prematurely.
- Around line 392-401: Update the request handler’s asset lookup to decode the
requested pathname before constructing the candidate file path, then validate
that the decoded path remains contained within distDir before checking or
reading it. Preserve the index.html fallback for missing or out-of-bound assets
and ensure encoded sound-file paths resolve to their files.

Review comments at @apps/native/host/src/capture.rs:
- Around line 94-105: Update the readiness flow around `settle` so both
readiness steps return an error when their condition is not met before the
timeout, rather than continuing the script with timings or screenshots. Preserve
successful behavior when the expected tree or text becomes ready, and propagate
readiness errors to the capture caller.
- Around line 114-118: Update round_trip’s input loop so it records latency and
advances only after the completed update corresponds to the input being
measured; ignore unrelated RuntimeMsg::Tree updates for that measurement. For
Enter inputs, also wait until the sent message appears in the update before
completing the round trip, using the existing message/update correlation
available in the code.
- Around line 297-300: Update the key conversion that currently special-cases
"Enter" so supported named keys, including "Backspace", map to their
corresponding Rune key variants; reject unsupported key names rather than
treating them as text. Preserve text-key handling for actual text input.
- Around line 77-79: Update the rendering timing around self.rt.frame so it
measures a milestone equivalent to the browser animation-frame milestone before
comparing it with textReadyMs; if equivalent GPU-render completion cannot be
measured here, label the measurements accurately and avoid presenting
textReadyMs as on-screen readiness.
- Around line 216-221: Update find_pressable to skip hidden nodes and their
subtrees before searching descendants or matching click text, using the
project’s established visibility check. Continue searching so a hidden match
cannot prevent returning a later visible match.

Review comments at @apps/native/host/src/layout.rs:
- Around line 57-58: Update apply_box so native containers with Style.clip
enabled constrain child rendering to the container bounds, using the container’s
radius for the clipping shape; preserve existing behavior for containers without
clipping enabled.

Review comments at @apps/native/host/src/main.rs:
- Around line 529-540: Update the input event handling around the
on_input_change and on_submit handlers to forward keydown events to the shared
handlers, including each event’s key and modifier values. Preserve the existing
input-change and form-submit behavior.
- Around line 292-295: Update the native input handling around apply_box and the
click handler so disabled fields cannot be edited or emit input events,
including while a save is pending. Reuse the existing disabled-state signal for
the organization-name field and preserve normal editing and event behavior when
enabled.
- Around line 292-295: Update the Rune element setup around apply_box to
preserve an aria-label from the host attributes by applying it as the element’s
label, so icon-only actions retain their accessible names.
- Around line 508-510: Update the webhook creation description field built with
text_input and edit so it supports multiline editing instead of single-line
input, and ensure pressing Enter inserts a newline rather than submitting the
form. Preserve form submission through its existing intended submit action.
- Around line 137-139: Update the whitespace-only text handling around the
`s.trim().is_empty()` check so spaces between mentions are preserved in inline
formatting contexts, while indentation-only text in block layouts continues to
be omitted. Use the existing context information to distinguish inline from
block content rather than retaining all whitespace-only text.
- Around line 342-347: Update the child memo-version construction around `key`
and `Style` to include the effective style, so changes to inherited `grow` or
`min_h` invalidate the cached child even when its wire hash is unchanged.
- Around line 151-156: Add the ordinary-element display guard to the Node::Svg
branch before calculating size or building the icon; when `st.display` resolves
to `none`, return `None` so the SVG is neither rendered nor included in layout.
- Around line 201-207: Update the `inherited` memo-dependency tuple to include
`inh.nowrap`, so changes to an ancestor’s white-space style invalidate cached
descendant text while preserving the existing dependencies.

Review comments at @apps/native/host/src/wire.rs:
- Around line 25-31: Add decoding for the hover text color in the native host’s
wire representation, then apply it as an inherited text color when the element
is hovered. Locate the relevant style fields in the wire struct and the
hover-style application logic; preserve existing hover background behavior.

Review comments at @apps/native/src/entry.ts:
- Line 59: Update the authorization-header condition in the request handler to
reject an empty backend URL and compare the parsed request and backend origins
before attaching the bearer token; preserve the existing behavior of adding the
header only for requests to the backend origin.
- Around line 138-139: Update the input handling around bridge.domMountAt and
composer.applyEditorEvent so edits received before the headless editor is ready
are not acknowledged and discarded. Buffer those edits and apply them when the
editor is ready, or prevent input until then; preserve the draft across the next
tree update.

Review comments at @apps/native/src/fixture/fixture-socket.ts:
- Around line 124-134: Update the LoadByIds response in the fixture socket to
commit using the source’s current sequence rather than the fixed FIXTURE_SEQ
value. Reuse the sequence state already advanced by offline writes so the
client’s lastSeq remains current.

Review comments at @apps/native/src/offline-backend.ts:
- Around line 48-50: Update the channelMember.clearNotifications responder in
the offline backend to clear the channel’s notification and membership rows in
fixture state, then publish both changes. Ensure the updated state is retained
in subsequent snapshots while preserving the responder’s existing transaction
response.

Review comments at @apps/native/src/shims.ts:
- Around line 108-110: Update the `location` shim so external URLs passed to
`location.assign` are opened through the native system-browser mechanism rather
than only changing in-memory history. Preserve the existing handling of
non-external navigation and use the native opener already available in the
application.

Review comments at @packages/foldkit-rune/src/bridge.ts:
- Around line 262-264: Update the pending-scroll reconciliation around isSettled
and pendingScrolls.delete so a host-reported clamped offset is eventually
applied and emits the appropriate scroll event, even if the viewport remains
stationary. Preserve protection against stale reports by distinguishing valid
clamped responses from outdated scroll updates.
- Around line 221-229: Update the geometry-mount handling around
`awaitingLayout` and `rects` so a replacement list cannot use cached geometry to
let `ApplyScroll` overwrite the saved row anchor before fresh layout completes.
Preserve the saved anchor until current layout is available, then restore it
after resizing; retain the existing mount and postpatch behavior once fresh
geometry is established.

Review comments at @packages/foldkit-rune/src/style.ts:
- Around line 446-448: Move the positioning cleanup in the style application
flow until after the inline declarations are applied with this.apply, so it uses
the final style.position and removes stale absolute insets when inline styles
override positioning. Preserve the existing sticky-row behavior while making
this final positioning decision.
- Around line 469-471: Update the style resolver around the `sides` helper to
expand multi-value `padding`, `margin`, `gap`, and `border-radius` shorthands
into their respective sides, axes, or corners before converting values. Apply
the appropriate shorthand expansion rules while preserving existing single-value
behavior.

Review comments at @packages/foldkit-rune/src/target.ts:
- Around line 395-397: Update the refresh handling around lastDocument and
commitDocument so acknowledgements are sent only for edits reflected in the
document being committed, including when an input event arrives immediately
before refresh. Do not acknowledge a pending edit alongside a stale document
value.
- Around line 219-223: Update handler identity and event dispatch around
handlerIds so each event is bound to the handler generation for the tree
currently presented. Reject stale clicks when the runtime has replaced the
handler for that path, rather than dispatching the replacement action; preserve
normal dispatch for the presented tree’s current handler.

Major comments:
Review comments at @apps/native/src/composer.ts:
- Around line 70-77: Replace the whole-document delete/replace in the native
edit handler with incremental changes routed through the editor’s existing input
path. Preserve existing document nodes, including quoted-message structure, and
ensure native edits invoke the same text-input handling as handleTextInput so
triggers such as @ open autocomplete.

Review comments at @apps/native/src/fixture/fixture-socket.ts:
- Around line 55-63: Update the fixture write flow around write to retain each
written row by source, then include retained writes in subsequent snapshots with
the current sequence. Reuse the existing source keying and snapshot-generation
path so writes remain available after a channel reconnects or reopens.

Review comments at @apps/native/src/shims.ts:
- Around line 269-271: Update copyToClipboard so writeText resolves only after
pbcopy exits successfully; handle child-process and stdin errors, and reject on
startup, write, or unsuccessful-exit failures so callers can report the error.

Review comments at @packages/foldkit-rune/src/target.ts:
- Around line 163-164: Update numeric entity decoding in htmlText to accept both
cases of the hexadecimal prefix and validate parsed values against the valid
Unicode code-point range before calling String.fromCodePoint. Ensure malformed
or out-of-range entities do not throw while preserving the decoder’s established
handling for invalid entities.

…ext styles like the browser

The capture never uploaded Rune's image atlas and drew without sRGB blending, which is
where most of the dark avatars and missing emoji came from. Inputs with a keydown
handler get their navigation keys, textareas stay multi-line.
…utside, offline reads clear unread

Also validates the benchmark's run count, cached web results and memory samples, and
serves escaped asset paths from the web bench.

…ecorded computed styles

A selector parser and cascade replace the regex ladder: layers, specificity, :is/:where,
child and descendant variants, group/peer/in/has, preflight and a small UA sheet. Adds
lab/lch/color-mix colours, container units, max-* and @container queries, auto margins,
shorthand expansion, sticky insets, shadows, rings and outlines.

src/conformance.test.ts replays 1,690 elements Chromium computed for the app and a
synthetic utility page (conformance/extract.ts records them): every property matches
but four allowlisted values the wire cannot express. The runtime also skips a bad host
line and drains stdout before it exits.
… fixes it found

bench/conformance renders the same scenarios natively and in Chromium and compares
element rects and pixels; --check holds them to thresholds.json. Fixes from it: a
growing sibling takes the space before an auto margin (the sidebar was cut off),
sticky headers stick, baseline rows align, the composer takes the editor's own box,
a space between inline chips stays, disabled fields are read-only, aria-label reaches
accessibility, display:none svgs are skipped.

The loop calls data.set([...], d) with a new array literal for each pixel in four of the five branches. At 2x scale a screenshot has about 4 million pixels. The runner decodes two screenshots per run, so this creates millions of short-lived arrays. For colour type 6, pixels already holds RGBA, so the second buffer and the copy are not needed.

Return pixels for colour type 6. For the other types, assign the four channels by index.

…n, refreshes keep their ack

Each tree carries a generation the host stamps on its events, and the runtime keeps the
last eight generations' handlers, so a click on a Link that just became Unlink still
links. A refresh re-sends the last document with the ack it was committed with, and a
clamped host scroll report lands once the runtime's own scroll stops waiting.
…update; early drafts survive

Capture rounds trips end at the tree that acknowledges the input (and, for Enter, shows
the sent text); readiness steps that time out and unknown key names fail the run;
clickText skips hidden matches. The report labels native times as frame built. Edits
typed before the headless editor mounts queue and replay. The fixture commits load
answers at the source's current position and unsubscribes closed streams.

Whitespace-only text in inline contexts has a gap for text that is not whitespace-only.

Whitespace-only text collapses to a single space inside an inline context. Text that contains leading or trailing spaces, such as " and " between two chips, is passed to text_run unchanged. Rune's own wrapping and trimming rules then decide whether those spaces survive. This is probably acceptable, but the test covers only the whitespace-only case.

Consider adding a test with mixed text between two chips, such as chip, t(" and "), chip. The test would confirm that the spacing survives.

…ut path

A new class re-parses the whole sheet (about 20 ms). The commit that meets one now goes
out with the current rules and re-sends only if the compile changed the CSS, so a key
never waits on it; a class Tailwind does not generate costs nothing. The composer field
takes the editor's fixed class instead of the live DOM's, whose ProseMirror state classes
were new on every focus. Also closes a bracket the sidebar's forced-colors class lost.
…mposer edits keep blocks

The host's shrink zeroed the minimum width, so it skipped elements with any min-w; it now
runs first and min-w is the floor after it. Downloads keep their bytes and an SVG
rasterizes at each size it is drawn at. capitalize starts words after hyphens and slashes,
and a vertically centred element pinned on both sides spans between them. A native field
edit replaces only the changed span of the editor's document, so lists and quotes stay.
Tailwind writes a leading digit as a hex escape (`2xl:p-2` is `.\\32 xl\\:p-2`); the
parser read it as a one-character escape, so those classes never matched.
… or drafts

The README describes the conformance harness and the remaining gaps.

The review above is of c412c40. The warnings it lists as standing, at the current head (4f113fa):

  • F25 min-w-0 shrink, F26 remote cache per size, F30/F37 whole-text replacement: fixed in fdc3f2d (host shrink runs before min-w; downloads keep bytes and SVGs rasterize per size; text-edit.ts replaces only the changed span). Tests: shrink_zero_keeps_an_inline_box_at_its_size, a_downloaded_svg_rasterizes_at_each_size_it_is_drawn, text-edit.test.ts.
  • F27/F28 debug logs: fixed in 3a33ef9. The socket log prints only the frame's _tag and size, and the editable log prints only the key and the text length.
  • F29/F36 runSyncExit: not a crash. In effect@4.1.1 it returns exitDie(new AsyncFiberError(fiber)) for a suspended effect instead of throwing (internal/effect.ts runSyncExitWith), which editorAt maps to Option.none(); edits in that window are queued (pending-edits.ts).
  • F17 knip entry: knip already reaches bench/run.ts through the bench script, and listing it too is reported as a redundant entry.

@maple-review-bot won't fix F17 and F29, both checked against the code:

  • F17: knip reaches apps/native/bench/run.ts through the bench script in apps/native/package.json. Adding it to the knip entry list makes knip report "Remove redundant entry pattern", and bun run knip is clean without it.
  • F29: Effect.runSyncExit does not throw on a suspended effect in the installed effect@4.1.1. runSyncExitWith returns exitDie(new AsyncFiberError(fiber)) (internal/effect.ts), which editorAt maps to Option.none(). The suspended lookup ends on the registry's 500 ms timeout, and edits in that window are queued (pending-edits.ts).

Env vars: every NATIVE_*, HAZEL_NATIVE_ENTRY, HAZEL_ASSET_ROOT, HAZEL_DATA and HAZEL_SESSION_TOKEN read is a local dev or benchmark knob of apps/native, with a default (offline data, 1280x800, light, src/entry.ts, stats and bench output off). No deployed app or CI job reads them, so nothing needs setting in any environment. Live mode is documented in apps/native/README.md.

@maple-review-bot

Both findings can be dismissed — I re-read the code and you're right on each.

F29. composer.ts:55 only meets a suspending get when the editor has not mounted (apps/web-foldkit/src/editor/registry.ts:61-72), and the effect-side claim holds: .context/effect/packages/effect/src/internal/effect.ts:5263 returns exitDie(new AsyncFiberError(fiber)) from runSyncExitWith, and the throw lives one function over, in runSync (:5277, throw causeSquash(exit.cause)). So editorAt sees a Failure and answers Option.none(). The rest of the path lines up too: the suspended lookup resolves on MOUNT_WAIT (registry.ts:27), and early edits are queued, not lost — entry.ts:148-160 turns none() into apply === false, and pending-edits.ts:25-29 re-applies every 50 ms until the mount accepts. One caveat on my evidence: the vendored .context/effect checkout is 4.0.0-beta.57 while the catalog pins effect: 4.1.1, so I'm reading the shape of 4.1.1 rather than its bytes; the runSync-throws / runSyncExit-returns split is deliberate API surface, so I don't expect it to differ.

F17. Nothing in apps/native imports bench/run.ts or bench/conformance/run.ts (only their own doc comments mention the paths), and they're only named by package.json:12-13. Since you report bun run knip clean without the entry and "Remove redundant entry pattern" with it, knip is resolving them from the scripts — I can't run knip in this sandbox (no installed deps), so your run is the authority. The only thing left is the comment at knip.json:36, which says the entry list covers "the benchmark runners" when it actually lists the browser bench page; wording, not behaviour.

Env vars. Confirmed: every read is entry.ts/offline-backend.ts with a default (NATIVE_WIDTH/NATIVE_HEIGHT 1280/800, HAZEL_DATA defaulting to offline, NATIVE_THEME, NATIVE_STATS/NATIVE_PATH/NATIVE_TREES_OUT off), the one hard requirement being HAZEL_SESSION_TOKEN behind HAZEL_DATA=live (entry.ts:58-59).
