The recent files list in the File menu and in the File → Recent... dialog now shows files that no longer exist on disk (moved, renamed, deleted, or on an unmounted drive) greyed out. Each entry is checked with _FILEEXISTS whenever the list is shown, so it stays current.

Changes

  • File menu: missing entries get the ~ prefix that the menu already uses for unavailable items. They're drawn greyed out and can't be selected with the mouse, the arrow keys or their hotkey.
  • Recent... dialog: missing entries are greyed out using the list box's existing color codes (CHR$(16) + color). They can still be selected, so opening one triggers the existing "Remove broken links from recent files?" prompt. The "Remove broken links" button works as before.
  • "Remove Broken Links" menu item: when all recent files fit in the File menu there is no "Recent..." item, so the dialog's "Remove broken links" button can't be reached and the disabled entries couldn't be cleaned up. In that case, if at least one listed file is missing, the File menu shows a "Remove #Broken Links" item above "Clear Recent...". It runs the existing CleanUpRecentList routine.

Notes

  • In the Recent... dialog, typing a letter to jump to an entry won't land on a greyed-out entry. This matters little, since entries are full paths.

Testing

Tested in the IDE on macOS.

Check each recent file with _FILEEXISTS when the File menu or the
Recent... dialog is shown:

- File menu: missing entries are greyed out and disabled, like other
  unavailable menu items
- Recent... dialog: missing entries are greyed out but still selectable,
so the existing "Remove broken links" flow keeps working

When all recent files fit in the File menu, there is no "Recent..."
item, so the dialog's "Remove broken links" button can't be reached and
missing entries (now disabled in the menu) could not be cleaned up.
Show a "Remove Broken Links" item in that case, when at least one listed
file is missing. It runs the existing CleanUpRecentList routine.
