Change Summary

  • Add deterministic hardware identity support for ACT Digital Twin veos and cloudeos node types.
  • Serial numbers and system MAC addresses can be generated from fabric-level templates or overridden per node. Production values are omitted from AVD metadata and ACT topology by default. When no Digital Twin system MAC is configured, the production MAC is used for EOS calculations such as SNMPv3 local Engine ID.
  • Containerlab hardware identity handling is outside the scope of this PR and will be addressed in a separate PR.

Walkthrough

AVD adds ACT Digital Twin serial number, system MAC address, and ZTP settings. It resolves identity templates with node-level overrides and capability checks. ACT and Containerlab fixtures cover hardware-identity combinations and template validation.

Changes: ACT identity passthrough

Change: Feature

Possibly related issues

Merge Risk: Minimal · previous review a4fb2

The negative-test fixture now uses a consistent name. No outstanding issue in the supplied changes prevents merging after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 271f3

The change remains within configuration and topology generation, with explicit mode, node-type, and identity-validation controls. No expanded execution or credential authority was identified. The external ACT platform’s handling of omitted ZTP settings remains unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A fabric-level setting can affect every supported ACT node that does not override it; node-level settings narrow the effect to that device. The inspected feature gates limit identity and ZTP output to veos and cloudeos in ACT mode. No additional tenant, service, or environment authority was established by this path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — New identity templates use the existing AVD string formatter, whose field resolver rejects underscore-prefixed attributes and keys. Empty rendered serials are rejected; Digital Twin MACs are validated as nonzero unicast addresses and normalized before use. The inspected template path produces data, not a new command-execution interface.
  • observed — ACT credentials continue to flow from fabric configuration into metadata and topology node-type settings. The inspected full PR comparison leaves that credential flow unchanged; it is an existing sensitive-output characteristic, not an introduced credential-exposure finding.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Confirm the external ACT contract that an omitted ZTP field disables provisioning, including a node-level false overriding fabric-level true. The repository producer relies on this interpretation; external enforcement was not verified.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Feat(eos_designs): Add ACT Digital Twin hardware identity and ZTP support" matches the main changes in the changeset: fabric- and node-level serial number and system MAC templates, ZTP settings, and ACT node-type gating for veos and cloudeos. It names the affected component and is specific. It is slightly long (73 characters), and it does not mention the Containerlab exclusion, which the description says is out of scope.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It has Change Summary, Component(s) name (arista.avd.eos_designs), Proposed changes, and Checklist sections, and it links the issue with Fixes #7422. Two parts are thin. The How to test section names only the digital_twin molecule scenario and gives no test commands or environment details. The Related Issue line is a valid link. The checklist is filled in, but the documentation and molecule boxes are checked without detail on what was updated beyond the summary.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 95.45% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 22 functions across 10 files. (3 skipped: 2 unsupported, 1 too large.)

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #7422 requires supported ACT nodes to emit configured resolved metadata.serial_number and metadata.system_mac_address. The current ACT metadata path returns only act_digital_twin_serial_number and act_digital_twin_system_mac_address. These values are None when no Digital Twin override is configured. The code therefore omits configured production identity values instead of passing them through. The PR adds coverage for Digital Twin overrides and unset values, but the reviewed evidence does not show production-identity passthrough coverage.

Resolution

For supported ACT nodes, use the resolved production identity when no Digital Twin override is configured. Emit each ACT identity key when its resolved value is configured. Omit each key only when its resolved value is unset. Add digital_twin Molecule coverage for production identity passthrough and unset-value omission.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The PR adds Containerlab hardware-identity inventory, topology, generated configuration, documentation, and verification changes. The PR description states that Containerlab hardware identity is outside scope. The PR also adds fabric and node ZTP schema, metadata, implementation, documentation, and test changes. Issue #7422 covers ACT hardware-identity passthrough and does not require ZTP configuration.

Resolution

Remove the Containerlab hardware-identity fixture and related generated and verification changes. Remove the ZTP schema, implementation, documentation, and test changes, or move them to separate PRs.

393-395: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Clarify the documented fallback and the explicit-false behavior.

The text says AVD falls back to the production identity when no override is set. The code resolves the toggle with default(), so an explicit node-level false overrides a fabric true. The code also writes ztp only when the resolved value is truthy. The text does not state that ztp: false omits the key. Add one sentence that states both rules.

so if we try to onboard this device and the real prod device to the same tenant (for whatever reason) it would fail right?

I don't think you can onboard again the same device (with same SN, system MAC and hostname) as SN is the unique ID on CV side. You can though try to stream to CV from 2 devices that use same SN, MAC and hostname but i have not tried this and i don't think it'll result in anything positive)

1-1: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Fix the typo in the fixture name: "rerial" should be "serial".

The host name digital-twin-act-empty-rerial-number contains a typo. The same typo appears in the directory name, the host_vars file name, the hosts.yml entry, and the expected error text. The fixture works while every reference stays consistent. The typo makes the test harder to find and search for.

Rename the host, directory, and host_vars file together to digital-twin-act-empty-serial-number. Update the error text and the hosts.yml entry in the same change.

Normalizer accepts the wrong MAC formats for some inputs.

The pattern checks the second hex digit of the first octet to enforce unicast. In the hhhh.hhhh.hhhh format, the first group is 4 hex digits, so the check is correct for the first octet. The check is also correct for the other two formats. However, re.fullmatch runs on the raw input, so uppercase and lowercase mixes pass. This is fine. The static analysis ReDoS hint is a false positive, because the pattern is a hardcoded literal.

Move the pattern to a module-level compiled constant. This avoids rebuilding it on each call and clears the hint.

Rendered Digital Twin serial number is not validated.

Hey @gmuloc ! Could you please re-check current implementation? I re-requested Claus's approval as well as there were too many changes since last review

I did check existing vars that use formatter and none of them use "_template" suffix (i removed all vars for "description"s from this list):

## "fabric_numbering_node_id_pool"
## "mlag_peer_l3_vlan_name"
## "mlag_peer_l3_vrf_vlan_name"
## "mlag_peer_vlan_name"

Is it correct to not use _template suffix for them but use for these new vars?

Renamed both variables here and under node_group settings as well (as those may be applied to the group of X switches and therefore we also need to signal somehow that produced values need to be unique per host)

device id is not universally unique. It would be better to use the hostname.

True. Switched to hostname for SN generation and removed common system_mac template from the example (format of the input production serial may be different here so it is hard to provide an example which would work for MAC in all cases)

Set this to `true` to enforce the required EOS configuration, guaranteeing SSH is enabled in the default VRF and preserving this connectivity.
Any IPv4 ACL applied to SSH in the default VRF is removed. IPv6 ACLs and SSH configuration for non-default VRFs are preserved.

Renamed

If unset, no serial number is included in the metadata or the ACT topology.
Applies only to `veos` and `cloudeos` node types. Ignored for all other ACT node types.
Ignored when `digital_twin.environment` is `containerlab`.

should we call out on both that they should render unique mac/serial? And should we enforce that somewhere? I don't want to add restrictions that are not real, but I think it is very likely that overlapping device ids could lead to the same serial here.

Added a note (that those should be unique within fabric) to the descriptions. Not sure about enforcement in eos_designs though... we are technically already checking this in cv_deploy (avd/python-avd/pyavd/_cv/workflows/verify_inputs.py) so duplicated SNs will never get pushed to CV
