The most valuable thing I've learned in fifteen years is how to become effective in unfamiliar domains — national newsrooms, industrial logistics, telecommunications, consumer streaming, and most recently production AI. The domains kept changing; the work I gravitated toward didn't — understanding complex businesses and building systems people depend on every day.
What all of it taught me was engineering judgment: making architectural trade-offs, evolving platforms, balancing cost and performance, and recognizing when building your own platform becomes the better decision. Technologies come and go. The real challenge is always the same — understand the business, make good engineering decisions, and build software that earns people's trust.
