JTE Spring Boot Agent Skill

A specialized, model-agnostic coding agent skill to automate the setup, configuration, and best practices of JTE (Java Template Engine) in Spring Boot 3 and Spring Boot 4 projects.

Designed to work across any LLM agent or coding assistant (Cursor, Antigravity / Gemini CLI, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Windsurf, Aider, ChatGPT, and others).

✨ Features

  • Automatic Spring Boot Detection: Inspects pom.xml to detect whether the project targets Spring Boot 3.x or 4.x (with fallback confirmation if ambiguous).
  • Dual Spring Boot 3 & 4 Support: Configures the matching starter (jte-spring-boot-starter-3 or jte-spring-boot-starter-4) with JTE 3.2.4 and Maven Plugin 3.2.4.
  • Automated & Safe Scaffolding: Helper scripts (scripts/scaffold.sh and scripts/configure-pom.py) safely patch pom.xml without XML syntax corruption.
  • Folder & Asset Scaffolding: Initializes src/main/jte, .jteroot, and static asset directories (js, css, fonts, images).
  • Profile-Based Configuration: Separates configuration cleanly into application-dev.properties (hot reload) and application-prod.properties (precompiled bytecode).
  • Code Standards: Enforces string concatenation (+) in JavaScript blocks to prevent template literal interpolation conflicts.
  • HTML Email Templating: Provides responsive email templates and EmailTemplateService patterns to replace Thymeleaf/FreeMarker for ultra-fast email rendering.
  • Optional Layout Composition: Standalone starter template by default, with optional reusable layout shell (layout/template.jte).

🚀 How to Use Across Any LLM Agent

Install this as a regular skill in your agent environment, or provide jte-spring-boot/SKILL.md directly as context to any AI assistant.

IDE Assistants (Cursor, Windsurf, Copilot)

  • Cursor / Windsurf: Add the contents of jte-spring-boot/SKILL.md to your .cursorrules or .windsurfrules file.
  • GitHub Copilot: Add it to .github/copilot-instructions.md.

Web & Chat Assistants (Claude, ChatGPT, Aider)

  1. Open jte-spring-boot/SKILL.md.
  2. Attach or paste the content into your prompt.
  3. Instruct the assistant:

"Follow the JTE setup protocol defined in this file for my Spring Boot project."

🛠 Prompts & Commands

Once integrated, prompt your assistant naturally:

  • Standard Setup:

"Use jte-spring-boot to set up JTE in this project."

  • With Shared Layout:

"Set up JTE in this project with a shared layout template."

  • For Email Rendering Only:

"Set up JTE for HTML email rendering in this Spring Boot project."

📋 To-Do / Roadmap

  • Minimal Starter Template & Controller Example: Reference Spring MVC controller and starter index.jte template.
  • JavaScript Guidelines Example (Do / Don't): Concrete snippets demonstrating the required + string concatenation pattern.
  • Scaffolding Helper Scripts & Resources: Automated scripts (scaffold.sh, configure-pom.py) and starter assets.
  • Dual Spring Boot 3 & 4 Support: Auto-detects Spring Boot version and injects starter 3 vs 4 with JTE 3.2.4.
  • Email Rendering Service: Standalone email template and Spring service example without requiring Spring WebMVC.
