Description

  • My change is breaking

TestGatherLayer_Losses::test_loss_dcl fails on master when the test suite runs locally. Its expected weights were recorded before #1827 changed how DCLLoss aggregates the negative terms. With the current code, one device without gather and two devices with gather give the same weights again, so the gather is correct and only the expected values are stale. With dcl_loss.py from before #1827, one device reproduces the old values exactly.

CI did not catch this because both gather test classes are skipped when GITHUB_ACTIONS is set. The skip reason still names codecov, which #1967 removed. The skip is still needed: Lightning's DDP launcher starts the second rank by running the same pytest command again, so the full suite runs a second time in parallel. This PR changes the reason to say that.

Changes:

  • New expected DCL weights.
  • Corrected skip reason in test_dist__gather__losses.py and test_dist__gather__benchmark_module.py.

Tests

  • My change is covered by existing tests.
  • My change needs new tests.
  • I have added/adapted the tests accordingly.
  • I have manually tested the change.

make static-checks passes. make test passes with 0 failures (before: 1 failure, test_loss_dcl).

Documentation

  • I have added docstrings to all public functions/methods.
  • My change requires a change to the documentation ( .rst files).
  • I have updated the documentation accordingly.
  • The autodocs update the documentation accordingly.

Implications / comments / further issues

  • Updated the expected weights in test_loss_dcl.
  • Revised the GitHub Actions skip reasons for both gather test classes to state that the DDP launcher reruns the full test suite.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 1 functions across 2 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Exercise both DCL configurations.

_test_ddp fixes n_devices at 2, so gather is always True. The documented one-device/no-gather path is not tested, and a regression limited to that path could pass. Parameterize test_loss_dcl for one and two devices and pass the value into _test_ddp.
