Summary

The Knowledge base plugin registry and its commands (#79, the first step of ADR-0012). No plugin is started yet: that is #80.

study knowledge-base add <name> (--url URL | -- <command> [args…])
                         [--allow-study-home-arguments] [--replace] [--dry-run]
study knowledge-base list
study knowledge-base remove <name> [--dry-run]
internal/
├── cli/ the three commands; the only importer of registrar
├── core/ Plugins(): reads the registry for status, and later #80 and #81
├── mcpserver/ no tool; a test checks its dependencies never contain registrar
└── pluginregistry/ Read, OpenProgram
├── registrar/ Add, Remove, the lock, the write
└── internal/regfile/ the file's shape, and the Walker that decides "inside the Study home"
  • The registry is knowledge-base-plugins.json, with a format number, beside config.toml, created 0600. It is not read when Lamplight's configuration folder is the Study home or inside it.
  • A program is resolved to an absolute path at registration. A program inside the Study home is refused, and so is an argument inside it unless --allow-study-home-arguments is given, which the entry records.
  • "Inside the Study home" is decided by file identity at every step on the way, from folders already open:
Walker.walk(path)
for each name on the way
open it from the folder opened before never by its full name again
if it is a link, read it from that folder and follow it from there
if os.SameFile(it, the Study home) -> refuse
  • CLI-only, no Event, no MCP tool. ADR-0012 gains a short note on what building this added to its rules.

Evidence

An independent review attacked the first commit and broke the main promise four ways. Each is now a test.

  • Before, a configuration folder reached through a link in the Study home, while the agent flips that link:

400 runs of list: the registry inside the Study home READ 63 times, refused 326

After, the same race against the new binary: read 0 times in 400.

  • Before, on a file system that ignores case, with STUDY_HOME=…/Study:

    study knowledge-base add a -- …/study/topic/kb "ok": true

After: refused. The identity rule's tests also pass on a casefold tmpfs.

  • Before, a planted MCP tool that reached AddPlugin through one wrapper in the core kept every test green and wrote the registry over MCP.
After: the same shape fails the dependency test, because the core cannot import registrar.

  • Before: add x -- python3 <Study home>/topic/kb.py registered a script the agent could rewrite. After: refused, with the flag to allow it named in the advice.

  • Before: add at the documented limits wrote a registry over the reader's 1 MiB cap, after which every command called it damaged. After: refused before the lock, and in the dry run.

  • Held from the start, and rerun on the final binary: 60 processes changing the registry at once lose nothing; 311 SIGKILLs at random moments leave a registry that parses; about 100 malformed registries give corrupt or newer_format, never a panic and never a rewrite.

  • make lint, make test (-race), go test -shuffle=on ./... and GOOS=darwin go vet ./... pass. 66 mutations of the new code each fail a test.

Merge Danger

Door: two-way

Nothing reads the registry to start a program yet. The file's shape becomes harder to change once #80 uses it.

Blast Radius: Registry

  • New file in the learner's configuration folder, and a lock file beside it that stays.
  • Known limits, stated in docs/cli.md: a hard link outside the Study home to a file inside it cannot be seen; sh -c, env and the like decide more at start than a check of arguments can; the walk needs to list each folder on the way.
  • Not run on macOS.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Manage Knowledge base plugins from the command line: add command- or URL-based plugins, list registrations, and remove plugins. Add supports replacement and dry runs, with human-readable and JSON output.
    • Plugin registrations are stored locally on the computer and do not change a Topic’s Knowledge base.
  • Safety
    • Commands validate plugin details and protect the Study home from unsafe paths. Arguments referring to Study-home content require explicit permission.
    • Registry and plugin problems are reported with actionable errors.

ADR-0012 says a Knowledge base plugin is registered on each machine, by
name, and that a Topic records only the name. This adds the registry and
the commands that change it (mordor-forge#79). Nothing starts or contacts a plugin
yet, and no Topic names one.

study knowledge-base add <name> (--url URL | -- <command> [args...]),
list and remove <name>, each with --json, and with --dry-run and shell
completion of the registered names where they apply. CLI-only.

Decisions:

- The file is knowledge-base-plugins.json in Lamplight's configuration
folder, beside config.toml: a format number and the plugins as a list
ordered by name. JSON, like the other files only study writes. It is
created for the learner alone to read, since a URL may carry a key. A
newer format is refused before anything else in it is read. Anything
this version cannot vouch for whole, an unknown key included, is
corrupt, with advice. A registry that is a symbolic link is not
  followed.
- The registry is read only where the agent cannot write it. When the
configuration folder is the Study home or inside it, by its path or
through a link, or is not an absolute path, the registry is not read
and the three commands say why (failed_precondition). Everything else
  in study works as before.
- It lives in the core, behind Core (Plugins, AddPlugin, RemovePlugin):
it needs the Study home, the environment and the folder study started
in, and the core is what will look a Topic's plugin up.
- A name follows the rule of a Topic's id. none and plugin, the kinds of
Knowledge base a Topic records, are refused.
- A command's program is found in the absolute folders of PATH, or from
the folder study started in, and stored as an absolute path with its
links unresolved, so a package manager's link survives an upgrade. A
program inside the Study home is refused, by its path and by where its
links lead. The arguments are kept as given.
- Registering a plugin as it is registered changes nothing. Another
command or URL under a registered name is already_exists, unless
  --replace is given.
- A change takes the lock of a file beside the registry, plans again
under it and replaces the file whole, so two changes at once keep each
other's. A dry run, and a change that changes nothing or cannot be
made, take no lock and make nothing.
- It records no Event: the registry is the computer's and no Topic's.
- No MCP tool. Tests fail if the server's source names an operation of
the core that changes the registry, or imports what could write a file
itself, and if a tool's input has a field for a program, an address or
a plugin that the test does not know.

list also says when a registered program is inside the Study home this
study uses, which can happen when the Study home was another then.

…indings

A review of 69957c7 showed that the registry's promise, that nothing the
agent can write decides which program study starts, did not hold. "Inside
the Study home" was decided from names, at the first hop of a path and at
its end, and the folder was then opened again by name. This closes the
nine points the review raised (mordor-forge#79).

- A path is now followed one name at a time, each folder opened from the
one before it and each symbolic link followed from the folder that
really holds it, and is refused as soon as it enters the Study home,
wherever it ends. The Study home is known by file identity, not by name,
so another letter case, link or mount of it is still the Study home; one
that is not there yet is known by where it will be. Lamplight's
configuration folder is found that way once, and the registry is read,
locked and written through the folder as it was opened. A program is
checked the same way, and pluginregistry.OpenProgram returns it open for
whoever starts it: the file is started, and its path is not resolved
  again.
- An argument that names something in the Study home, as a whole or after
an =, is refused unless --allow-study-home-arguments is given; the entry
records it (allow_study_home_arguments, format still 1) and list flags a
plugin whose argument is there without it. An argument that names a file
relative to where the command was typed is refused, since a plugin is
started from the registry's folder. docs/cli.md says that this catches
the honest mistake and is no guarantee, and that no check of a path sees
  a hard link.
- What changes the registry moved out of the core, into
  internal/pluginregistry/registrar, which only internal/cli imports.
internal/pluginregistry reads it, and the core and the MCP server link
that. What the two share, the opened configuration folder included, is
in an internal package neither the core nor the server can import. A
test fails when go list -deps ./internal/mcpserver holds the registrar,
so a wrapper in the core can no longer register a plugin for a tool.
The tests that look at names stay as a second line, and split camelCase.
- A change never writes a registry study would not read back: one over
the 1 MiB the reader takes is refused before the lock, in the dry run
  too.
- A dry run looks at everything the change needs and fails where the real
run would, with the same message: a folder that cannot be written in or
made, a link that leads nowhere, a lock that is no regular file or
cannot be opened. Each is failed_precondition with advice.
- The reader takes exactly what the writer writes. Now corrupt: a program
path that is not clean, bytes that are no text, a null, a key in another
letter case, a key given twice (the format included), a URL not written
as add cleans it. U+200E, U+200F and U+061C are refused in arguments
like the other characters that change the direction of text.
- add refuses a program path with .. in it, which leads elsewhere by name
  than through a link.
- The registry's lock is never opened through a link. list quotes a word
that starts with =. A refused URL is not repeated, so its password is
not; a port of 0 or above 65535 and a #fragment are refused.

The registry's errors carry the documented codes on a type of their own,
which core.CodeOf reads.

The registry decides "inside the Study home" by file identity at every
step, checks a command's arguments as it checks its program, and keeps what
writes the registry in a package only the CLI imports. ADR-0012 now says
so, with the reason for each.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds a per-computer Knowledge base plugin registry, CLI commands to manage it, and read-only registry access through core. It validates registry data and checks registry and plugin paths against the Study home. Tests and documentation describe these behaviors and the CLI-only write boundary.

The new knowledge-base commands look sound. The usage line in docs/cli.md shows --dry-run, --replace and --allow-study-home-arguments after the plugin command. If a learner copies that order, those flags are passed to the plugin, so a command meant as a dry run actually registers the plugin. Correcting the flag order in the documentation is a small follow-up that does not block merging.

Write the invisible format characters in test literals as escapes. The test inputs contain raw Unicode format and bidi control characters that a reader cannot see. If an editor drops one of these characters, a test case no longer checks what its name says. Raw bidi controls in source also trigger Trojan Source warnings. staticcheck ST1018 reports the Go literals.

…characters in tests

Review: the documented syntax of study knowledge-base add put its flags
after -- <command>, where they would be taken as the plugin's arguments.
And the registry's tests held raw bidirectional and zero-width characters
in their literals, which no reader can see; they are written as escapes now.

…nable means runnable by this user

Two findings on the registry's walk (mordor-forge#79).

A Walker that was made while the Study home did not exist knew it only by
where it would be, and applied that only to paths that did not exist
either. When another study made the Study home before the walk got there,
a first study topic create racing study knowledge-base add, every name
existed, nothing compared it with anything, and a program, an argument or
a configuration folder inside the new Study home was taken for outside.
The Walker now looks for the Study home again at every folder for as long
as it knows none, and takes its identity as soon as it is there. Once it
is known by what it is, where it would have been no longer counts.

A program counted as runnable when any execute bit was set, so a file
whose only execute bit is for others, or for the group, on a file the
learner owns, was registered although they cannot run it. The system is
now asked whether the user study runs as may run the file, through the
folder the walk ended in and not through the path again. On PATH such a
file is passed over, as a shell passes it over. What OpenProgram opens
must be the file the walk looked at: another file put under the name
meanwhile is refused, since nobody checked it.

pluginregistry.Read and pluginregistry.OpenProgram keep their signatures.

P2 Badge Avoid re-walking the program after opening it

When another process repoints a registered symlink into the Study home after w.OpenProgram has safely opened its original target, this call invokes problem, which runs CheckProgram on the path again and rejects the already-open safe descriptor based on the new target. That makes startup race link changes and contradicts the descriptor-handoff guarantee; use an argument-only check here and reserve the full program check for listings.

P2 Badge Continue past missing candidates in Study-home PATH entries

When PATH starts with a Topic-local directory such as $STUDY_HOME/topic/.venv/bin, CheckProgram returns InsideError as soon as it enters the Study home even if that directory has no file named by program, so this branch rejects a later global executable. The standard-library os/exec.LookPath contract says it “searches for an executable ... in the directories named by PATH,” and its Unix loop returns only when a candidate is executable; continue when the inside candidate itself is absent or non-runnable, while still refusing an executable actually found there.

P2 Badge Respect case sensitivity for prospective Study-home paths

On a case-sensitive Linux filesystem, if the Study home and configuration path are both still missing below the same parent (for example /home/u/study and /home/u/Study/config), EqualFold treats their first components as identical and rejects every registry command as being inside the Study home. These are distinct future folders on that filesystem, so prospective-name comparison must reflect the filesystem's case behavior rather than unconditionally folding case.

P2 Badge Inspect dash-prefixed values extracted after =

When an option is --config=-local.toml and the regular file -local.toml exists in the invocation directory, candidates produces the extracted value but this condition skips it because it starts with -. The registration then succeeds even though the plugin starts in the registry directory and resolves that relative filename somewhere else; only treat the original whole option as a flag, not its value after =.
