Added application authentication with browser sessions, API request authentication, and DPoP-bound connections to SystemAuth.
Added organization-managed service accounts, including key and role management, command-line tools, and a client for obtaining and using short-lived tokens.
Added an optional JWT-bearer token grant for service accounts; it is disabled by default, requires DPoP proofs, and issues tokens without refresh tokens.
Added support for applications to accept service-account identities when explicitly enabled.
Added configurable token-signing secrets to support token validation across restarts and instances.
Bug Fixes
Cross-origin writes using session cookies now return a 403 CSRF rejection response without an authentication challenge.
Documentation
Added application-authentication and service-account guides, token-secret rotation guidance, and v0.26.0 release notes.
identity/appauth assembles the relying party for one application: labelled
configuration, a required DPoP key, membership filtering by application
role, one request-authentication chain with a cookie-write origin check,
and calls to SystemAuth for the signed-in person. A Postgres principal
store on sf_rp_principals replaces the copies applications keep. API keys
remain as a deprecated option.

Service accounts belong to one organization, hold application roles there
through a service_account membership, and get short-lived DPoP-bound
tokens through the RFC 7523 JWT-bearer grant, so their tokens carry the
orgs claim and lose access through the usual access changes. Adds the
account service, mountable commands, a Go client, and acceptance of
service-account tokens in applications.

RequestAuthenticator turned BearerMiddleware's refusal of a
cookie-authenticated cross-origin write into a 401 with a challenge,
which tells a client to sign in again. The credential is valid and the
request is not, so it is now a 403 CSRF_REJECTED without a challenge, as
BearerMiddleware itself answers.

ParseDPoPKey accepts a PEM P-256 private key in PKCS #8 or SEC 1 form and
refuses anything else with a message naming the problem. ReadDPoPKeyFile
reads one from a file, for deployments that deliver secrets as files.
DPoPKeyCommand is the command that makes a key.

Config holds the issuer, client, public URL, allowed origins, audience,
accepted clients, extra scopes and the DPoP key or key file. Validate
reports every problem, each starting with a label a host can replace:
ConfigFromEnv reads APP_* variables and labels errors as
"Issuer (APP_SYSTEMAUTH_ISSUER)". The DPoP key is required, URLs must be
https except on a loopback host, and the public URL must be an origin.

New builds the relying-party client with the application's DPoP key, the
/bff/* handler, memberships filtered to the application's roles, and one
request-authentication chain: the session or a DPoP-bound access token,
then any extra authenticators such as AAuth. Middleware and Authenticate
return a requestprincipal.RequestPrincipal; refusals wrap
ErrUnauthenticated or ErrForbidden with the protocol's response.
SessionToken and Transport call SystemAuth's APIs for the signed-in
person with proofs. Options that loosen a default (no DPoP key, unbound
tokens, API keys, in-memory stores) are explicit and log a warning, and
API keys are deprecated from the start. ResourceMetadataHandler serves
RFC 9728 metadata.
Tests run against an embedded SystemAuth that requires DPoP nonces: a
browser sign-in, cross-origin writes, a restart with the same key and
stores, a command-line client's tokens, and a bound token refused as
Bearer.

The application authentication spec described the cookie-write origin
check as new; relyingparty already makes it. The package relies on it,
and the request authenticator now answers it with a 403. Also records the
Labels option and that Application filters only the default membership
source.

A service account is a service principal in one active, non-personal
organization with a service_account membership. The service creates,
lists, disables, enables and deletes accounts, adds generated or
supplied key-pair keys (ES256, RS256 of 2048 bits or more, EdDSA),
revokes them, and grants and removes application roles. Revoking the
last usable key records a sessions_revoked access change.

EntJWTBearerKeys implements Fosite's rfc7523.RFC7523KeyStorage. A key is
found only for a self-issued assertion whose subject is an active
service principal in an active organization, and only when the key-pair
credential is the principal's own, active, unrevoked and unexpired.
Every refusal is fosite.ErrNotFound. Scopes are the key's intersected
with the account's allowed scopes, and used assertion IDs share the
client-assertion JTI store.

storetest.PrincipalStore checks what ResolvePrincipal relies on:
creating and finding by subject, email (ignoring case) and ID; not-found
answers for unknown and malformed IDs; subject and email conflicts that
leave nothing behind; managed principals without an email; linking a
subject; and refreshing the profile at sign-in. The in-memory store
passes it.

PrincipalStore implements relyingparty.PrincipalStore over a new
sf_rp_principals table, created by EnsureSchema with the session and
login-state tables, with partial unique indexes on sf_principal_id and
lower(email). A managed principal is stored without an email. Inserts use
ON CONFLICT DO NOTHING and then name the conflicting index, so no driver
error types are needed. SetActive and Delete manage principals, and
NewStores returns the store with the others.

Against the embedded SystemAuth: a command-line tool whose client the
application does not accept is refused although its tokens are bound,
and the application calls SystemAuth's userinfo endpoint for the
signed-in person with Transport, which SystemAuth accepts only with the
DPoP proof Transport adds. An example shows an application on Postgres
stores protecting its API.

Fosite's RFC 7523 handler is composed when oauth.jwt_bearer.enabled is
set (off by default), with its own maximum assertion lifetime (5m) and
token lifetime (15m). jti and iat are required, client authentication
is skipped, and the assertion's audience must be the token endpoint or
the issuer. A request for the grant without a DPoP proof is refused
with invalid_dpop_proof before any client rule applies. Tokens are
stored under a reserved client with no secret, since token storage
records a client for every token. Discovery lists the grant only when
it is enabled.

The guide covers identity/appauth: configuration and relabelling errors,
generating and delivering the DPoP key, memberships, authenticating
requests and acting as someone else, calling SystemAuth for the person,
the options that loosen the defaults, moving an existing principals table
into sf_rp_principals, and protected resource metadata.
The relying-party setup example now sets the DPoP key and points to the
guide, and the session/bff and session pages say that an application
signing in through SystemAuth uses identity/appauth.

A service account never signs in, so applications had no local principal
for it and refused its tokens as an unknown principal. With
BearerConfig.ServicePrincipals, a verified access token whose subject is
unknown and whose principal_type claim is "service" creates the local
principal through PrincipalStore.CreatePrincipal with the new
VerifiedIdentity.Service; a concurrent first request uses the principal
the other created. Without the option nothing changes.
The in-memory and Postgres principal stores create service principals
without an email, the conformance suite covers them, and appauth exposes
the option as Options.ServiceAccounts. MemoryPrincipalStore gains
SetActive.

The token's subject is the account's principal ID rather than the
assertion's subject, so the orgs claim, principal status checks and
revocation apply as for any principal. Access tokens and introspection
carry principal_type "service", and introspection also carries the
orgs claim the access token was issued with. No refresh token is
issued, the lifetime is oauth.jwt_bearer.token_lifetime, and the
assertion's audience is not copied into the token. An assertion signed
with another algorithm than its key's is refused. On success the key's
last_used_at and last_used_ip and the service principal's last_used_at
are recorded.

An embedded SystemAuth served over HTTP issues DPoP-bound tokens to a
service account holding P-256 and RSA keys. Introspection reports the
account as subject, cnf.jkt, the orgs claim with its role and
principal_type. Replay, an expired assertion, an overlong lifetime,
missing jti or iat, the wrong audience, another subject, a missing DPoP
proof, a revoked key and a disabled account are refused, and a disabled
account's earlier token introspects as inactive.

serviceclient turns a service account's private key into an http.Client:
it signs a one-minute self-issued assertion for SystemAuth's token
endpoint, exchanges it through the RFC 7523 JWT-bearer grant for a
DPoP-bound token, retrying once with SystemAuth's nonce, and sends each
API request with the token and a proof. Concurrent requests share one
exchange, a token is replaced a minute before it expires or when the API
refuses it, and P-256, RSA and Ed25519 keys are accepted; proofs use a
P-256 assertion key or a P-256 key made for the process. LoadPrivateKey
refuses a key file others can read.

SystemAuth issues service-account tokens under its reserved

serviceaccountcmd is the service-account command a host CLI mounts, and
systemauth registers: create, list, show, disable, enable and delete
accounts; key add, list and revoke; and role grant and remove. Accounts
are named by ID or sa_ identifier, and --json writes JSON. key add --out
generates a key pair and writes the private key to a new owner-only file,
never overwriting one, and prints the issuer, account and key ID the
workload needs; --public-key registers a supplied key. DefaultService
builds the service with the host's role vocabularies.

An operator creates an account, grants it a billing role and adds a key

This release adds application authentication, PostgreSQL principal storage, service accounts, and an optional RFC 7523 JWT-bearer grant. It also adds DPoP-bound service-account clients, CLI commands, relying-party integration, configurable token HMAC secrets, tests, and release documentation.
Changes: Application Authentication and Principal Storage
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Application authentication and principal storage identity/appauth/*, identity/relyingparty/pgstore/*, identity/relyingparty/principal.go, identity/relyingparty/requestprincipal.go, identity/principal/service.go
Adds identity/appauth configuration, DPoP key handling, handlers, middleware, and resource metadata. Adds PostgreSQL and memory principal-store support for service identities. Cross-origin cookie-authenticated writes now return 403 CSRF_REJECTED without an authentication challenge.
Service-account lifecycle, keys, and roles identity/serviceaccount/*, identity/principal/service.go, identity/approle/approle.go
Adds account creation and lifecycle operations, public-key management, key revocation, and application-role management. Service accounts receive active service_account memberships and can hold application roles.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "Feat/appauth" is a branch-style label, not a descriptive sentence. It names one real part of the changeset, the new identity/appauth package and its guide, but the changeset also covers service accounts, the JWT-bearer grant, HMAC token signing, principal storage, CSRF handling, and release notes. The title is vague and does not state the main change.
Resolution
Replace the title with a short descriptive sentence that states the primary change, for example: "Add identity/appauth application authentication package". If the PR is meant to ship v0.26.0, consider mentioning service accounts as well, since the change set is large.

…C secret
SystemAuth generated the HMAC secret for authorization codes, refresh
tokens and opaque access tokens at each start, so every refresh token
stopped working after a restart and on another instance.
tokens.hmac_secret (32+ bytes, from the environment) sets it, and
tokens.hmac_verification_secret is a second secret accepted but never
signed with, for pre-staging and promoting a new secret. The secret is
hashed to the 32 bytes Fosite keys its HMAC with, so all of it counts.
Without one, a secret is still generated per process, with a warning.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Convert empty sf_principal_id values to NULL in the migration SQL.
The sf_rp_principals_sf_principal_id_idx index excludes only NULL values. A legacy table can store unlinked principals with sf_principal_id = ''. If two such rows exist, the INSERT fails with a unique violation and the whole migration rolls back. The SQL already applies nullif to email. Apply the same to sf_principal_id.

CreateService assigned the authorization sync error to err after the

A principal store written before VerifiedIdentity.Service creates every
principal as a human, so a service account's first request created a
human principal and later requests authenticated it as a person. The
middleware now checks the type after creating the principal, after a

Revoking a key recorded an access change only when it was the account's
last usable key, so tokens obtained with a leaked key kept working until
they expired while another key remained. Tokens do not record the key
that obtained them, so revoking any usable key now records
SessionsRevoked; a workload holding another key gets a new token.

The JWT-bearer lifetimes inherited the shared Duration examples, among

The standalone systemauth binary knows no application roles, so the
walkthrough grants roles through a host binary. Removing a role takes
the organization out of the account's memberships rather than refusing
the account, revoking any usable key ends current tokens, the client uses
a separate P-256 proof key for RSA and Ed25519 assertion keys, and the
key expiry flag is --expires-in.

P-256 only, and key revocation and role removal are described as they
behave.

Set the HMAC secret in the systemd environment example.
The example references SYSTEMAUTH_TOKEN_HMAC_SECRET, but its /etc/systemauth/env block does not define it. If an operator copies both blocks, the reference expands to empty and SystemAuth generates a new HMAC key at each start. Refresh tokens then fail after a restart. Add a generated, persistent SYSTEMAUTH_TOKEN_HMAC_SECRET value to the environment block. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Review comment at @docs/systemauth/deployment.md at line 315:
Update the `/etc/systemauth/env` example in the systemd deployment instructions
to define a generated, persistent `SYSTEMAUTH_TOKEN_HMAC_SECRET` value, so the
`hmac_secret` reference resolves to the same secret across restarts.
