Hi!
Microsoft is making a fundamental change to how Windows 11 File Explorer's Details view shows file sizes.
The change first appears in Windows 11 Insider Release Preview Build 28000.2796 (KB5120996), released on August 14, 2026. Microsoft's release notes state: "[File Explorer] File sizes in Details view now display using appropriate units (KB, MB, and GB) instead of KB-only, making them easier to understand at a glance."
This is, of course, one of the main features of your “Better file sizes in Explorer details” Windhawk mod,
As Microsoft is not providing a way to go back to the original "view everything in the Size column in KB" setting, I was wondering if you might consider giving your mod an option to display one consistent unit of measure once again.
For my purposes, it was useful the original way: very easy to differentiate file sizes relative to each other with a single quick glance, rather than needing to read each individual file’s unit of measure.
The fact Microsoft is not planning to offer a simple registry entry toggle, or an extra checkbox in the Folder Options, View tab to switch between the original and new Size column units display, or even another column ("Size in KB", "Size in MB", etc.) that could be added to the view, is an unforced error. I mean, they already wrote, tested, and implemented all the code, and only needed to provide a way to use it again! LOL
Anyway, I hope you consider updating your really nice tool with the ability to force the Size column to once again show a folder full of files in one consistent unit of size. A bonus would be to be able to choose the unit of size: Bytes, KB, MB, GB. 🙂
