Updates for Fall 2026

rchillyard and others added 3 commits August 31, 2026 12:29
The Java side is generated from INFO6205 2126f840, which writes the two
SOLUTION blocks that had been empty and gives Node equals and hashCode. The
stubs students see are unchanged; what changed is that there is now a
reference answer behind them, and MyTreeTest.Node1 is a real test.

The Python keeps its stubs, as an exercise should. Its module docstring
recorded that the Java had no reference answer and so nothing to port -- true
when written, and no longer. Node here is a frozen dataclass, so it already
compared by value; the two trees now agree on that, and on replace matching a
child the caller has described rather than one the caller already holds.
Four tests added for the semantics settled in the Java: matching by value,
leaving a node with no such child alone, replacing only the first of several
equal children, and keeping the replaced child's position.

The new tests skip until the exercise is written, like the rest. Verified
writable by applying reference solutions in a scratch overlay, where all nine
MyTree tests pass.

Python 1607 passed, 252 skipped, ruff clean; Java 1392 with 328 skipped.

Generated from INFO6205. Two javadoc comments called MSD "Mean Squared
Deviation" and "Mean Square Displacement"; in a radix sort it is Most
Significant Digit.

The book is printed, so corrections belong here. The first entry: Table 8.1's
MSD row is captioned as using a cutoff of 256 and was measured at 20, because
the cutoff was honoured only on the instrumented path and timing runs are
uninstrumented.

Includes the re-measurement, with quicksort and merge sort from the same run so
the four columns can be compared with each other; what would happen if the
caption were honoured instead; the smaller error on p. 141; what is not
established; and how to reproduce it.
