Noisy Noses: Real-time visualisation of acoustic nasalance

Description

Noisy Noses is an application for real-time visualisation of acoustic nasalance. It was developed in Max by Cycling '74. The application takes audio input from a pair of microphones (one for oral energy, one for nasal energy), computes the nasalance value in real-time, and visualises it using a simple graphical interface. The application is designed for use in speech therapy and public engagement settings to provide immediate feedback on nasalance levels during speech production.

You can find our open-source hardware for acoustic nasalance here!

Requirements

  • You can download a pre-compiled MacOS app here.
  • You can run or edit the Max application file max/NoisyNoses.maxpat using Max

If you want to try the app, but don't have MacOS or a Max license then please email me and I can send you a pre-compiled trial version for your operating system.

Usage

The below screenshot shows the application in use. The mouth and nose will light up respectively, based on the levels of oral and nasal acoustic energy detected by the microphones.
