PowerPoint's Export to Video plays builds and transitions with their timings; DeckCraft had only the one-frame-per-slide GIF. This adds a frame-sequence export that a video encoder (ffmpeg, a browser) can turn into a video. It is a step toward #889 (video export) and adds no encoder of its own. The MP4/MOV series (#608, #616, #622, #628, #629) plays the same show timeline for its animations, so the two should end up sharing one frame plan; see the review thread.

  • file.export {format: "frames", path: folder, fps, secondsPerStep, secondsPerSlide, transitions, useTimings, width} writes frame-000001.png… at a constant fps.
    • Every build step of each slide plays through its timeline (the show's own deckcraft_anim::state_for), settles and holds secondsPerStep. Automatic steps run on, and the last step holds secondsPerSlide.
    • A slide's pre-click state is held, and the export pauses before a click step that follows an automatic first step, as the show does.
    • With timings, a slide's Advance Slide After time is its wait before each click step and before it advances, as the show plays it. This follows the deck's Use Timings setting (PowerPoint's Use Recorded Timings), and useTimings overrides it either way.
    • Each slide's transition plays frame by frame from the previous slide with the show's composition (Morph shape by shape).
  • Limits and output:
    • Hostile parameters are bounded, and the frame and pixel totals are capped before anything is drawn.
    • The frame height follows the slide's aspect ratio, and both width and height are rounded to even numbers, because many 4:2:0 video encoders refuse odd frame sizes. (GIF export is unchanged.)
    • Identical consecutive frames are encoded once.
    • The new frames are staged and replace the earlier sequence only once they are all written, so a failed export leaves the earlier sequence whole. One export runs at a time per folder (a lock file .deckcraft-frames-lock is left in it); a second is refused with nothing written.
    • The answer maps frame numbers back to slides.
  • The MCP export tool, CLI help, docs and the slide-show parity notes carry the new format. The schema shares secondsPerSlide with GIF and states the wider range; the engine refuses below 0.1 s for GIF.
  • The per-shape show state (state_for) moves from the UI crate into deckcraft-anim, so the engine can play the show headlessly; the UI converts its result.

This PR does not change outline export. An earlier version of this branch carried an outline export change; it is now #1879 (merged), which covers the RTF outline and the outline view too.

No new dependencies. Tests cover step counts, holds and transitions, After timings with and without Use Timings, even frame sizes, hidden slides, folder creation and replacement, parameter bounds and the MCP tool.

Walkthrough

The file.export command now writes numbered PNG frames for selected slides, including animation builds, holds, and optional transitions. It returns frame and slide-range metadata. Animation-state calculation is shared with slideshow rendering, and the CLI, MCP tool, tests, and documentation describe the new format.

Changes: PNG Frame-Sequence Export

Layer / File(s) Summary
Share animation state with rendering
crates/anim/src/show.rs, crates/anim/src/lib.rs, crates/render/src/opts.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/show.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/show/render.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/show/ui.rs
The animation crate adds ShapeFrame and state_for. The renderer converts the shared state to ShapeState, and slideshow rendering calls the shared function.
Validate options and plan frames
crates/engine/Cargo.toml, crates/engine/src/frames_export.rs
FramesOptions validates export parameters and slide selection. The planner schedules build, hold, and transition frames, records slide ranges, and enforces frame and pixel limits.
Render and replace PNG frames
crates/engine/src/frames_export.rs, crates/engine/src/io.rs, crates/mcp/tests/it/automation_roots.rs
The exporter renders and encodes numbered PNGs, counts encoded copies toward the byte limit, and stages replacement of matching frames. Filesystem helpers support folder creation, file operations, locking, and cleanup. Tests cover limits, naming, replacement behavior, and write-root enforcement.
Expose and verify frame export
crates/engine/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/file.rs, crates/mcp/src/tools.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, crates/mcp/src/tests.rs, apps/deckcraft-cli/src/help.rs, ROADMAP.md, docs/*
The engine command and MCP tool expose the frames format and its options. Tests check selection, output, timing, and tool responses. Help and documentation describe frame-sequence export.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 8e2e3

Some transitions can briefly show shapes that should be hidden. The change is mergeable with that visual limitation understood.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to c516b

Filesystem authorization is preserved, including in export workers. However, replacement can lose the previous frame sequence after a late failure, and simultaneous exports to the same folder can interfere with each other. These risks concern generated output rather than expanded filesystem privileges.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · observed: Replacement deletes the prior numbered files before moving staged files individually, with no rollback. A late authorization or rename failure, or interruption during commit, can leave neither the previous complete sequence nor a complete replacement. For example, a destination directory with a frame filename survives deletion but can make the subsequent rename fail. The staging-failure test establishes protection only before this destructive commit begins.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Every export to a folder reuses and clears the same staging directory without run ownership or exclusion. Independent processes exporting to the same destination can delete or overwrite each other's staged frames and interleave replacement. Because the returned count comes from the plan rather than verified committed output, a run can report success for an incomplete or mixed sequence. This is a same-destination ownership and failure-containment risk, not a demonstrated write-root escape.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — Caller-selected destinations add bulk creation and replacement of frame files under existing filesystem authority. With automation roots configured, mutation is constrained to authorized write roots. Without roots, paths are not policy-constrained and operate with the process's filesystem permissions.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Interference between simultaneous exports requires access to the same effective destination. It can corrupt generated output or remove another run's staged frames within existing write authority; the inspected path does not establish privilege escalation or an independent cross-tenant boundary.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Headless calls enter the configured confinement scope, and frame workers inherit that scope explicitly. Generated writes, deletions, and rename endpoints pass write checks. Resolution follows existing symlinks and uses component-aware containment; the integration test asserts that a destination frame symlink outside the root is rejected and its target remains unchanged.
  • observed — The existing confinement contract explicitly excludes protection against another local process swapping paths between validation and opening. This pre-existing limitation is not evidence that this PR introduced an authorization bypass. CLI root flags are rejected with remote connection mode rather than implying confinement of the connected application.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Authorization checks remain active during commit, but denial of a later destination does not undo earlier deletions or moves. Confinement therefore protects outside-root targets without guaranteeing preservation of the in-root sequence on failure.

Remove the MCP frame-export folder on failure too.

The test uses a predictable folder from the process ID. It calls remove_dir_all only at the end. If an earlier assertion fails, the PNG folder stays in the temp directory.

Hold the path in a small guard struct that implements Drop with remove_dir_all. Use the same guard as in crates/engine/src/tests.rs.

Based on learnings: "Flag Rust tests that create workspaces or filesystem state, unless it uses an accepted alternative: isolated temporary directories with cleanup".

Make the frame-export scratch folder unique and remove it when a test fails.

frames_dir builds a predictable path from the process ID and a name. It removes anything already at that path, but it does not create the folder exclusively. Each test deletes its folder only on its last line. If an assertion fails first, the PNG folder stays in the temp directory.

Return a guard that removes the folder in Drop. The tests then clean up on both success and failure.

♻️ Proposed fix
-fn frames_dir(name: &str) -> std::path::PathBuf {
-    let dir = std::env::temp_dir().join(format!("deckcraft-frames-{}-{name}", std::process::id()));
-    let _ = std::fs::remove_dir_all(&dir);
-    dir
-}
+struct FramesDir(std::path::PathBuf);
+
+impl FramesDir {
+    fn path(&self) -> &std::path::Path {
+        &self.0
+    }
+}
+
+impl Drop for FramesDir {
+    fn drop(&mut self) {

+fn frames_dir(name: &str) -> FramesDir {

+    let _ = std::fs::remove_dir_all(&dir);
+    FramesDir(dir)
+}

Callers then use dir.path() and drop the manual remove_dir_all calls. The nested deeper/still case removes the parent folder through the guard.

Based on learnings: "Flag Rust tests that create workspaces or filesystem state, unless it uses an accepted alternative: isolated temporary directories with cleanup".

Thanks. CodeRabbit's notes here were fixed before your comment landed: the Major one (a one-slide frames export ignored slide) now takes slide when slides is absent, with a test, and the Minor typo is corrected. Both threads are resolved, and CodeRabbit's re-review found nothing new. The branch is now rebased on main.

Propagate directory-listing errors from remove_files.

On POSIX, a directory can allow file creation and deletion while denying directory listing. In that case, read_dir fails, but remove_files returns Ok(0). file.export then writes a shorter sequence and leaves higher-numbered old frames in place. A numbered-file encoder can consume those stale frames, which violates the export contract.

Preserve the missing-directory behavior, but return other listing errors:

Suggested fix

Use automatically cleaned directories for filesystem tests.

If an assertion or export fails, the final remove_dir_all call does not run. The frame PNGs or outline file then remain in the temporary directory. Use a unique per-test temporary directory with a cleanup guard for both paths.

Based on learnings, Rust tests that write filesystem artifacts should use isolated temporary directories with cleanup.

Review notes (comment only; I did not run the Rust tests locally, CI is green on this head: gate, SonarCloud, CodeRabbit).

What I checked:

  • Read crates/engine/src/frames_export.rs option parsing: fps, holds, width, slides and includeHidden are bounds-checked and a wrong type is refused rather than defaulted; frame and pixel totals are capped. Read the new create_folder / remove_files / write_file_direct helpers in io.rs: each path goes through file_access::check_write. remove_files deletes plain files in the target folder whose names the matcher accepts, so a re-export into an existing folder removes the earlier frames; it is worth a test that a non-frame file in the folder survives (I did not run one).
  • Outline change: real PowerPoint (16.0, COM, temporary presentation, Title and Content slide with title, body, footer, slide number and date turned on, SaveCopyAs to RTF, closed unsaved): the RTF outline contains the title and body text and not the footer text, which agrees with the footer/date/number placeholders being dropped from the outline export.
  • Not compared against PowerPoint: Export to Video timing (step holds, transition frames, Morph). I did not run an export or play the frames in a video encoder.

I only skimmed the ui-egui and anim move of state_for; CI passing is what I am relying on there.

Propagate the write-root scope to frame workers.

Reachability: External
Exploitability: Difficult
CWE: CWE-59

Headless::call applies the write roots with confine on the calling thread only. The workers that run_jobs spawns do not inherit that scope. With no process-wide roots, current() returns None on those workers, so write_file_direct passes its check_write and std::fs::write follows a pre-existing frame-000002.png symlink to a file outside the write root. export checks write access only for frame 1. remove_files skips symlinks, so the link survives.

Capture the active roots before spawning the workers, and apply them in each worker. The link-resolving check in check_write then rejects a symlink that leads outside the root.

Apply the active roots in each worker

Preserve the previous frame sequence until the replacement succeeds.

export removes the previous frames before run_jobs. A later write error or byte-cap error can return an error after earlier jobs have written frames. The folder can therefore lose a complete sequence and contain no replacement or only a partial replacement. This can leave the video encoder with an incomplete sequence.

Stage the new frames and replace the previous sequence only after every job succeeds. Remove the staging output on failure.

Thanks. Pushed:

  • Timings: a slide with an Advance Slide After time now waits that long before each click step and before it advances, as the show does when it uses timings. This follows the deck's Use Timings setting (PowerPoint's Use Recorded Timings) by default, and useTimings overrides it either way. Slides without an After time keep secondsPerStep and secondsPerSlide.
  • The outline change moved to Outlines leave footer, date and slide-number placeholders out: export, RTF and the outline view #1879, which also covers the RTF outline and the outline view.
  • MP4/MOV: agreed that two frame plans would drift. The plan here is frames_export::plan: build frames (slide, step, time) and transition frames, built from the show's timeline. I can move it into deckcraft-anim so Video: animations and sound (AAC/PCM) in MP4/MOV export #616 can use it, or build on Video: animations and sound (AAC/PCM) in MP4/MOV export #616's timeline if that lands first. Which would you prefer?
  • GIF range: the schema shares secondsPerSlide between the two formats, so it states the wider range. The engine refuses below 0.1 s for GIF, and the description says which range applies to which format.

Allow frame export with a write-only destination.

If the destination is inside the write root but outside the read root, count_files fails its check_read call. This happens even when the backup folder does not exist. file.export then stops before writing any frames, although the destination is writable. Check backup-folder access under the write authority used for the replacement operations. Add a test with separate read and write roots. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

crates/engine/src/frames_export.rs:600: Fixed in d291099: count_files now checks write access instead of read, since the count belongs to replacing the folder, so a destination under a write-only root exports and the write-root confinement is unchanged; export_needs_only_write_access_to_the_destination exports into a write-only root and checks that a folder outside it is still refused.

The step_is_auto(step + 1) branch in frames_export.rs was dead, as you said: only the first main step of a slide can start by itself (timeline.rs, where the auto flag is only set for the first step), so later steps always follow a click. I removed the branch and simplified the comment; the frames come out the same. Frame sizes are now rounded to even numbers on both sides (width and height, frames only; GIF is unchanged), since many 4:2:0 video encoders refuse odd sizes. This is stated in the file.export signature, the MCP schema and docs/mcp.md, and a test covers odd heights on 16:9 and 4:3 slides. The description now says plainly that this PR does not change outline export; that change is #1879, merged. Whether the frame plan is shared with the MP4/MOV work (#616) is a question for the maintainers; my earlier reply already offered to move the plan into deckcraft-anim. Fixed in 87dbeea.

…t-anim

The slide show computed a shape's ShapeState at (step, t) in ui-egui, where
nothing below the UI could reach it. deckcraft_anim::state_for now answers a
ShapeFrame (the shape's AnimState and its paragraphs'), the renderer converts
it with From<ShapeFrame> for ShapeState, and the show uses that, unchanged in
behaviour. The engine can now draw show frames headlessly (frames export).

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…e for a video

PowerPoint's Export to video plays builds and transitions with timings;
DeckCraft had only a one-frame-per-slide GIF. The new format writes
frame-000001.png… into a folder at a constant fps: every main step of each
slide plays through its Timeline (deckcraft_anim::state_for, the show's own
state), settles and holds secondsPerStep (automatic steps run on), the last
step holds secondsPerSlide, and each slide's transition plays frame by frame
from the previous slide with the show's composition (Morph shape by shape).
Hostile parameters are bounded, the total frame and pixel counts are capped
before anything is drawn, identical consecutive frames are encoded once, and
the answer maps frame numbers back to slides. Engine file access gains the
folder, direct-write and remove helpers in io.rs so frames go through the
checked gateway. MCP export tool, CLI help, docs and parity notes updated.

… out

An agent run exporting a deck as an outline got the footer text and the
slide-number field (‹#›) as body lines under each title. PowerPoint's
outline view shows title and body placeholders only, so the exporter now
skips the footer-row placeholders as it already skipped the title.

…a click step after an automatic first step

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ritten

export removed the folder's earlier frame-NNNNNN.png files before rendering, so a write error or
the byte cap part way through left neither sequence whole for the video encoder. The frames now
go to a staging folder inside the export folder (.deckcraft-frames-new, inside the write root).
Only when every frame is written do the earlier frames move to a backup folder
(.deckcraft-frames-old) and the new ones move into place; the backup is removed once the last new
frame is in. A move that fails part way removes the new frames it placed and puts the earlier
ones back, so the folder never holds half a sequence. A failed export removes the staged frames
and leaves the earlier sequence as it was. A backup folder that still holds frames (an export was
interrupted, or could not put them back or remove them) is the user's to sort out, so the export
is refused rather than overwriting it.

The moves and the clearing take regular files only, so a frame name taken by anything else is
refused before anything is written: a folder would make the move fail, and a link past the new
sequence's end would carry it on with an old frame (a link leading out of the write root is
refused as such). An entry whose type can't be read is an error, not a file skipped, so no stale
frame stays and none goes missing. Tests, including a path that is a file ("is not a folder").

… does with timings

A slide with an After time waits it idle before each click step and before
it advances, as the show plays it with timings; useTimings overrides the
deck's Use Timings setting either way, and slides without one keep the
requested holds. count_files checks the automation read root. The outline
export change moves to its own pull request.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The show cuts between slides and shows each one fully built when Show without
animation is set. The frame plan now holds one settled still per slide and
plans no transition or build frames in that case.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A staging or backup folder linked to the export folder made the cleanup delete
the earlier frames (or the new ones) through the link. Both are checked with
symlink_metadata before any cleanup or replacement.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A link named like a frame in the staging folder was skipped by the cleanup but
followed by the write, overwriting its target. Frames are now created new, so an
existing name is an error. write_file_direct has no other caller.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
count_files checked read access, so a destination under a write-only automation root was refused
before any frame was written. The count belongs to replacing the folder, so it needs write access,
like the other folder checks; the confinement to the write root is unchanged.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ranch

Many 4:2:0 video encoders refuse odd frame sizes, and the frames export exists to feed one, so
both sides are now rounded to even numbers (GIF is unchanged). Only the first main step of a
slide can start by itself, so the check on later steps never held and is removed; behaviour is
the same.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
If removing the earlier frames fails after the new ones are installed, the
export returns an error with the new sequence in place. The description now
promises the earlier files only for failures while writing the new ones.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Overlapping exports to the same folder shared the staging and backup folders, so one could clear the other's staged frames and then delete the earlier sequence while reporting success with frames missing. An export now takes an advisory lock on a dot file in the folder (released when it ends or the process dies, so no stale lock) and a second one is refused with nothing written.

Remove the failing-path leak and keep the refusal assertion exact.

The loop only asserts r.is_err(). A different error, such as one from the folder write, also passes the test. Match EngineError::BadParams as the neighbouring test does on Line 6743. Then the test proves that opt_usize_param rejects the value. The bad folder is also never removed if an assertion fails.
