feat(backups): download local backup archives from the files page - #1283
Add a GET download endpoint with the same nested server/backup/file checks as restore and delete.
Authorize downloads using the existing BackupFilePolicy::view permission.
Stream the original .sql.gz or .tar.gz archive directly from the managed server with phpseclib SFTP callbacks, without staging it on the Vito controller or loading the entire file into RAM.
Preflight remote existence before responding; reject missing, unsupported, and incomplete backup files.
Add a Download item to the per-file actions menu, visible only for eligible Local backups.
Harden response caching and content-type headers.
Add Pest coverage for streamed data, database and file archives, statuses, missing files, path scoping, project membership, and guest access.
Document the new workflow in the v4 backup docs.
Security considerations
No public backup URLs or direct filesystem exposure.
Existing authentication and object-level authorization are required.
The requested archive path is derived from the stored BackupFile model; no client-supplied path is accepted.
Download is read-only and does not restore, modify, or delete backup files.
Testing
Added tests/Feature/BackupFileDownloadTest.php.
The repository could not be checked out in my execution environment (GitHub network access unavailable there), so local Pint/Pest/TypeScript checks have not been run. Please review the checks on this PR.
Related: #425 (previous request to download backup files).
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Download completed backup files from local storage directly to your browser. Database backups download as .sql.gz files, and file or directory backups as .tar.gz archives.
Downloads are available for backups in supported completed or restored states and require permission to view the backup file.
Documentation
Added guidance on downloading backups and handling archives that may contain sensitive data.
Adds an authenticated download route for eligible Local backup files. The route checks backup relationships and access, then streams the remote file over SSH. The backup file menu includes a Download action for supported statuses.
The controller checks backup relationships and authorisation. The action checks the storage provider, backup status and remote file type, then streams the file through SSH. Feature tests cover supported downloads, response details, missing files, rejected statuses, relationships and access.
Download action and guidance resources/js/pages/backups/components/file-columns.tsx, docs/4.x/servers/backups.md
The file menu shows Download for eligible Local backup files. The documentation describes supported archive formats, access requirements and download handling.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The implementation meets the coding requirements in [#1282]. The controller applies nested server, backup, and file relationship checks and uses the existing authorisation flow. The action limits downloads to Local storage and eligible completed states, checks the remote path before the response, and streams the archive through SSH without staging or buffering the full file. The response preserves the archive filename and uses download-safe headers. The UI adds the action for eligible Local files. Tests cover archive types, streamed content, missing files, statuses, relationships, project membership, and guest access.

Explanation
The reported changes remain within [#1282]. The SSH helper and fake support secure streaming and test isolation. The feature tests, documentation, response headers, and per-file menu entry directly support the requested download workflow. No unrelated implementation or product scope is identified.

Open the remote archive before the response starts.
isRegularFile() runs before the response is built, but streamDownload() opens the file later, inside the response callback. If retention deletes the archive in between, the failure happens after Symfony sends a 200 attachment response. The client receives an empty download, not a 404.
🐛 Suggested fix
Not included. The inspected code does not establish a safe, localized change. A fix would need to open or verify the remote file before the response headers are sent.

Update the backup download flow around `$ssh->isRegularFile($path)` so the
remote archive is opened or otherwise verified before the response headers are
sent. If it is unavailable at that point, return a 404; stream the response from
the verified open file rather than reopening it in the later callback.

Use the frontend navigation rule for the download item, or document an exception.
The new Download item renders a raw <a> to an internal route. The path instruction for resources/js/**/*.{ts,tsx} says navigation uses <Link> or router.visit(), never raw <a> for internal routes. Before you change it, confirm that the replacement still starts the attachment download. If it cannot, record the download-link exception in the guideline.
As per path instructions: "Navigation uses <Link> or router.visit() — never raw <a> for internal routes."

Update the Download item’s internal-route navigation to use the established
frontend navigation component or router, while preserving the
attachment-download behaviour. If neither supports starting the download,
document a specific exception for this download link in the navigation

Add a mid-stream failure test for the streamed download.
SSHFake::streamDownload() calls $onChunk once and cannot throw. The real SSH::streamDownload() throws SSHError when the transfer fails, which can happen after chunks have been sent. DownloadBackupFile does not catch this exception, so it propagates out of the response callback. The current feature tests cover only successful streams and the missing-file 404, which fails before streaming. A change that catches and suppresses a mid-stream failure in DownloadBackupFile would pass the current suite.
SSH::fake() replaces the SSH helper. A fake-based test therefore cannot detect removal of the false-result check in SSH::streamDownload(). That check needs separate coverage.
Add a streamDownloadWillFail flag to SSHFake, following the execWillFail pattern. When the flag is set, streamDownload() should send output through $onChunk and then throw the SSHError class used by app/Helpers/SSH.php. Add a feature test that sends partial output, then asserts that the failure reaches the caller.

Add a test for a backup requested through a different server URL.
The test download checks the server and backup file relationship changes only the backup. Every request in tests/Feature/BackupFileDownloadTest.php uses $this->server. Removing the $backup->server_id === $server->id clause from BackupFileController::download() would therefore not fail any existing test. Add a request that pairs $this->backup and $this->file with a second server, and expect a 404. Rename the existing test if it checks only the backup-file pairing.

Add a feature test alongside “download checks the server and backup file

assert the response is 404 to cover the server-to-backup relationship.
