excalidraw: add skill for writing and editing boards the app opens live - #15
Adds an excalidraw skill: when a board is the right answer and when it is not, the minimal .excalidraw scene and element shape, labels bound to their boxes, and how to edit a board in place (keep ids, bump version and versionNonce, delete by isDeleted, write the whole file once). It is a single SKILL.md, with no scripts.
It goes with the Instrument PR that opens .excalidraw files as a live canvas the person and the agent both edit (instrument-org/instrument, branch excalidraw-canvas). Without this skill, "make me a whiteboard" gets an HTML page built with the instrument-page whiteboard kit, which can't sync with the canvas.
Measured with that PR's whiteboard eval cases, Haiku 5.5 on the Claude account, 3 trials per arm:
Prompt
Without the skill
With it
6 prompts that want no board (2 of them diagram requests)
0 of 18 made a board
0 of 18 made a board
"Make me a whiteboard I can move things around on"
0 of 3 (an HTML page, 548K to 641K tokens)
3 of 3 (91K to 98K tokens)
"Draw our signup flow as an Excalidraw file"
3 of 3
3 of 3
Add a sticky note to an existing board
3 of 3, every element kept
3 of 3, every element kept
The edit case passed without the agent loading the skill, so the description's "names a .excalidraw file" trigger is unproven. Three trials per cell is a small sample.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Documentation
Added guidance for creating and editing Excalidraw canvases, including conventions for shapes, text, arrows, and spacing.
Clarified how to preserve existing content during edits and how to hand off completed canvases.
Instrument opens a .excalidraw file as a canvas the person and the
agent both edit, merging the agent's writes into it. This skill tells
the agent when a board is the right answer (a whiteboard asked for, a
sketch to rearrange, a named .excalidraw file) and when it is not (an
answer to read, which goes in the reply or an instrument page), the
minimal scene and element shape, how labels bind to their boxes, and
how to edit in place: keep ids, bump version and versionNonce, delete
by tombstone, write once.
It also tells the agent not to render its own preview image, since the
app draws the drawing in the reply.
Rejected: a line in the agent's prompt | every chat would carry it, and the eval showed no over-reach to steer against
Tested: Instrument chat evals (whiteboard cases), Haiku 5.5, 3 trials per arm: no board on 18 of 18 unasked prompts with the skill (18 of 18 without); "make me a whiteboard" made a .excalidraw 3 of 3 with it, 0 of 3 without (an HTML page instead, at about 6x the tokens); named-format and edit cases 3 of 3 either way

Walkthrough
Adds an excalidraw skill that describes how to create and edit .excalidraw JSON files as editable Instrument canvases. It defines element and layout conventions, file-editing rules, and handoff instructions.

Summary
Canvas guidance and editing workflow skills/excalidraw/SKILL.md
Defines when the skill applies, documents canvas elements and layout conventions, and specifies editing and handoff rules.
This adds guidance for creating and editing Excalidraw boards. The skill is missing a runnable recipe and a verification step, and its base template could mislead an agent about bound elements. These can cause occasional malformed boards but do not block use, so the change is mergeable with small follow-up edits.

skills/excalidraw/SKILL.md covers generative layout and multi-step edits. Add a short runnable JavaScript or TypeScript recipe that creates elements, assigns IDs, updates version fields, and writes the .excalidraw file. The recipe can use standard file APIs; the absence of a bundled script or external Excalidraw library is not an exception to the recipe guidance.
This is a recommended maintainability improvement, not a major runtime issue.

that boundElements is null only when no elements are bound; require an array
listing the reciprocal references for every shape with bound text or arrows.
- Line 34: Extend the Excalidraw write workflow after “Write the whole file back
in one write” to re-read and parse the saved file before handoff. Verify element
IDs are unique, container and binding references are reciprocal, and changed or
deleted elements satisfy the version and deletion-field invariants.
